HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!
Well, we made it to V-day, exactly one week overdue! This little baby was certainly enjoying his world in the womb. Zach and I went in on Thursday morning for a biophysical profile at the hospital. Its pretty much an ultrasound where they evaluate the baby's well-being...they look at things like amount of amniotic fluid, baby's movements, breathing, etc. Everything looked GREAT!! Thank goodness, but I told Zach that I was secretly wishing for low amniotic levels or some other reason to induce me that day! Actually, my fluid level was high! Go figure!
So, off we went to lunch at a delicious bistro...then we took Evie to the mall to run out some enery at the Swamp! She loves climbing on everything! I had called Libby, my midwife to let her know how I was feeling and to see if there was anything we could do that day...she call me back an hour later just was we were pulling into the house. She asked if I had gotten my NST (non-stress test) up in L/D...that is where they hook you up to the fetal monitor to watch the baby's heartrate for an hour or so and see how his heartrate responds to movement and contractions (if you have any). I told her "No" and she said I had to go get it done. So I left Zach at home with Evie for her nap. I figured I would be back in a couple of hours.
I had 5 or 6 contractions during the NST and the nurse was concerned that the baby wasn't responding as well as she had liked. So she called Libby...and she also checked my cervix...I was 4 centimeters. She acutally had another nurse come in and confirm her finding. The day before I had contractions 10 minutes apart for almost 12 hours...guess they were doing something! Libby was leaving to go out of town the next morning for 3 days, so she suggested she just break my water and start me on a little Pitocin to get things really rolling. 4-7 centimenters is considered active labor, so it probably was inevitable that I would go into real labor any moment...
I gladly accepted the offer and called Zach to tell him I wasn't coming home. They admitted me and I was very nervous about getting Pitocin...afraid of how out of control it might make my labor and that I could end up needing an epidural or even a c-section. They started Pitocin at 5:00 and broke my water around 5:15. There was LOTS of fluid...the contractions started intensifying almost immediately. Mom and Dad arrived with Evie sometime after 7 and John and Laura were right behind them...thank goodness everyone made it this time!
I hit transition labor around 7:45ish and it felt like the contractions were coming every minute...I think there was like 30 seconds rest in between them and they were intense!!! For about 20 minutes, I told Libby I couldn't do this anymore and that I needed something for the pain. She told me I WAS doing this and then I got on my hands and knees and with the next contraction felt like pushing, so I did. Libby was getting Chris, our wonderful nurse, to get some calming music, but then she heard me push and said "Kristy, did you just push?"...and told Chris they'd better just set the room up for delivery...
Beckett Paul Sutton was born at 8:56 pm.
He had the cord wrapped around his neck twice and she acutally had to cut the cord while his head was out, but shoulders were still in!!! I guess it looked pretty scary at the other end...but all I was telling them was "get him out, please!" I couldn't push him out because with each push, the cord just got tighter...that fiasco probably lasted only a few seconds, but it felt like forever! He was born after only a few minutes of pushing and I was so relieved to be done with that!! I was totally exhausted.
I kept thinking during labor... "Am I really in this place again?!?! doing natural childbirth?!?! What was I thinking?!?!"
So this labor was much shorter than the 29 hours I endured with Miss Evie Kate!
Here I am in just as labor is beginning...I look way to happy...you can tell the contractions weren't bad yet! Then things got a little more intense and I couldn't speak through them and had to really concentrate on relaxing. And finally he arrived---such a wonderful moment of our love!HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!

He was a healthy little boy and Zach is such a proud daddy!!! And a darn good one too!! He said he would have been happy with a little girl, which I believe, but I know he is so excited to have a little man! And here is Chris, our nurse (she was also our nurse with Evie) and Libby, our midwife...and little Beckett!
I was beat after this kid! He looked so pale at first...but pinked right up!
Our little man! He was and still is a little jaundiced...looks much more yellow in pictures than in person!!!!! HE is the most handsome baby in the world!!!!
